Statement

Date: Oct. 26, 2021
Location: Kearny, NJ
Issues: Infrastructure

Representative Tom Malinowski joined Governor Phil Murphy and President Joe Biden in marking the groundbreaking of the Gateway Program's Portal North Bridge. President Biden was introduced by resident of New Jersey's 7th Congressional District and SMART representative, Joseph Williams.

"Today is a momentous day for New Jersey -- we're breaking ground on a critical component of the Gateway Program by replacing a bridge that has slowed down commutes for decades and keeping our promise to start bringing home the tax dollars we send to Washington. Delivering the Portal North Bridge for my constituents has been among my highest priorities since taking office, and I am incredibly proud of the work we have done in Congress to produce this major win.

But we are not done yet. I will continue the push to accelerate construction and will be working alongside Governor Murphy and the Biden Administration to ensure additional projects that my constituents need -- including the Hunter Flyover and the all-important Hudson River Tunnel -- are able to get to this point.

Passing President Biden's Build Back Better Agenda, which includes the bipartisan infrastructure bill, is essential to bring these projects across the finish line. This legislation is our best opportunity in a generation to rebuild America by replacing that extraordinary turn of the 20th century infrastructure with even more extraordinary turn of the 21st century infrastructure, and invest in projects that can withstand the impacts of climate change. In New Jersey, we must level with the fact that storms like Tropical Storm Ida will become ever more frequent and address the urgent need for flood mitigation through resilient infrastructure.

I'm grateful to President Biden and Governor Murphy for their partnership on the Portal Bridge, and I look forward to many more groundbreakings as we move the Gateway Program forward."
